We all love beautiful family photos, but let’s be honest - getting kids to cooperate during a photoshoot can feel like a challenge. Whether they’re wiggly, shy, or full of energy, the key to a smooth session is preparation! Here are my top tips to make the experience fun, stress-free, and full of genuine smiles.

1. Set the Right Expectations

Kids pick up on energy - if you’re stressed, they’ll feel it too! Instead of telling them they need to “behave and smile,” talk about the session as an exciting adventure. Let them know they’ll get to play, run around, and have fun while I capture their best moments.

📌 Tip: If they’re old enough, show them pictures from past sessions so they can see how fun it will be!

2. Plan Outfits in AdvanceComfort is key!

Choose outfits that allow your child to move freely and feel good. Avoid anything itchy, tight, or with tags that might bother them. Soft fabrics, layers, and neutral or pastel colors photograph beautifully.

📌 Bonus: Let them have a small say in what they wear - if they feel involved, they’ll be more excited about the session!

3. Bring Snacks & Small Treats

A hungry kid is an unhappy kid. Pack some easy, mess-free snacks (like crackers or fruit snacks) and have water on hand. Small treats, like mini marshmallows or Smarties, work well as little rewards.

📌 Tip: Avoid chocolate or colorful candies that might stain their mouth or clothes!

4. Schedule Around Their Best Time

Try to plan the session when your child is naturally happy and well-rested. If they usually nap in the afternoon, a morning session might be best. If they’re happiest after a snack, plan accordingly!

📌 Bonus: If we’re doing a golden hour shoot, a late nap can help them stay happy later in the day.

5. Let Them Be Themselves

Not every child will sit still and smile on command - and that’s okay! Some of the best photos come from candid moments - laughing, running, snuggling with you, or playing. Instead of forcing poses, I’ll guide them naturally so we can capture their true personality.

📌 Tip: If they’re shy, I’ll take time to warm up to them before jumping into photos. No rush!

6. Bring a Comfort Item

If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or toy, bring it along! Not only can it help them feel at ease, but it can also make for a sweet, sentimental photo.

📌 Bonus: If we need to, I can “hide” the toy near my camera to get their attention!

7. Make It a Game

Kids love to play, so let’s make the session fun! We’ll do tickle fights, races, twirls, and silly prompts to keep them engaged. The more fun they have, the more natural and joyful the photos will be.

📌 Example: Instead of saying, "Smile!" I might ask, "Can you whisper a silly secret in Mommy's ear?" - this often leads to the cutest giggles!

8. Relax & Enjoy the Moment

The best advice? Don’t stress about perfection. Kids will be kids, and that’s what makes the photos real and special. Some of the most heartwarming images come from the little in-between moments - hugs, laughter, and natural expressions.

📌 Tip: If your child has a meltdown, don’t worry! We can take breaks, reset, and keep things light.

Final Thoughts

A successful photoshoot isn’t about getting a “perfect” smile - it’s about capturing your child’s personality, love, and joy. With a little preparation, we’ll create beautiful, natural moments that you’ll cherish forever.
